The Dis Part 3: Packing and Planning Your Days

So you are getting ready to go to Disney? Wahoooo! Time to focus on Step 3 of the Stress Free Disney Plan: Packing and Planning.

If you missed the first two parts of this series, follow these links:

PACKING:

1. You can find a super cute and helpful packing checklist here. Adjust accordingly.

2. If you have cute yet uncomfortable shoes, leave them at home. Blisters are not your friends at Disney! Pack some blister band-aids like these just in case!

3. My mom always tells everyone to pack TWO pairs of sneakers. That way if it rains and one pair gets soaked you have a back-up pair. Sound advice! (Note: I can walk a marathon in my Crocs flip-flops so I only pack one pair of sneakers and two pairs of flip flops but I would only recommend this route for HARD CORE flip flop wearers. Not sure? Go with sneaks.)

4. Pack jeans, sweats or leggings, and layers. Unless you are going in the summer time there is a chance you might have some cool weather. (One time we went in February and I only packed one pair of jeans and one hoodie for each family member. It was cold all week and we were in the same outfits in every photo. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice to have some options.) Also, I ALWAYS bring a sweater to dinner because I get chilly in the AC. The rest of my family thinks I am crazy but I would rather take it and not need it then be freezing all night.

5. Buy glow sticks at the dollar store before you go! Last year when I went they even had glow wands with stars on the end (think Tinkerbell!). Buy about twice as many as you think you will need. Some of them may not work and there is nothing worse than being one glow stick short. :(

6. Consider buying some souvenirs BEFORE you go. You can find great deals on Disney merchandise everywhere... from Target to the dollar stores. We let our boys pick out ONE treat while they are at Disney. We try to go to Downtown Disney toward the end of the week where you can find pretty much anything that they see in the parks. If they want to get it on day one we try to push them off a bit but sometimes we just go with it and say, "Ok, you are done."

7. If you are going with a large group or a special occasion (i.e. family reunion or a big birthday), consider having group t shirts made. My favorite spot to do this is CustomInk.com. Nice quality, huge range of sizes and easy to put together a cute design without trying very hard. Fun fact: everybody looks good in aqua. Random but true!

8. Feel like getting crafty? There are literally thousands of fun DIY Disney ideas out there. Pinterest is a great place to hunt them down. Here is one my faves (visit my "All Things Disney World" Pinterest board for more ideas. I made the autograph books last year and they were a huge hit!):

PLANNING:

1. As promised, here is my magical formula for lower-cost, stress-free Disney days. As long as you will be at Disney for 4 days or more you will be able to visit ONE PARK each day. That allows you to go with the basic (read: least expensive) "Magic Your Way" park ticket. There is SO much to do in each park that we have never found a need to visit more than one in a day. So here is what we do:

  • Find out which park is opening early for the "Extra Magic Hour (EMH)" and choose a DIFFERENT park to visit. Otherwise you will have to be up at the crack of dawn waiting in line with 10,000 other early birds. It will be dark, it might be cold, and it won't be fun or magical for anyone.
  • Get to the non-EMH park when it opens or shortly thereafter. Hand all of your park tickets to an adult or trusty teen and have them jog (or run!) to the ride that you MUST go on that day. They can pick up Fast Passes for the whole family. The rest of the family should proceed to your second choice ride/show and by the time you get there, the Fast Pass runner (who can move much faster through the crowds by going SOLO) will meet you there. This way you know that by lunch time you should hit at least two of your favorite rides or shows.
  • Grab lunch at the park or back at the hotel. Chill. Swim in the pool. Nap. Don't forget to really take some time to enjoy your resort and your time off. Head back into the park in the late afternoon when it is a little cooler and start checking the rest of your must-do's off of your list.
  • Get dinner at the park or wherever you want and then play bedtime by ear. If our kiddos (or we) are tired, we call it a night and get to bed early. This is a vacation, NOT a forced march. (Bonus: If you stay at my favorite spot, the Beach Club Villas, you can see Epcot's fireworks from many of the rooms so even if the kiddos are in bed, you can grab a glass of wine (that you had delivered with your groceries! See Part 2.) and chill on your balcony and take in the show. Maybe even try requesting a room with a fireworks view. You never know!

2. If you are staying at a Disney resort, you have the option of signing up for the Disney Dining Meal Plan. Some people love it, some people are wishy washy about it. Here are my thoughts: If you have kids that eat table food (i.e. not babies), it is a GREAT deal. Depending on what time of year you go, it only costs about $15 a day for kiddos on the Standard Meal Plan. That means one sit-down meal, one "quick service" meal, and a snack. (To view the "2013 Standard Meal Plan" brochure, click here.) Also, if you are traveling with extended family or any large group, it makes things super easy. No stressing about who can afford what. Will that restuarant be too expensive for Joe and Schmoe? It doesn't matter because if they are on the Standard Meal Plan they can pick whatever entree they want from the menu and pay the same daily price as everybody else. (Note: We have never done the "Quick Service" or "Deluxe" dining plans so feel free to weight in on those in the comments.)

3. Fun with Meal Plan Snacks: Every time we go to Disney I challenge my family to find the most expensive "snack" to get with our meal plan. There is a huge range of things you can get as your "snack" credit so keep your eyes peeled. My favorite way to use it is to get something super yummy at the bakery (like a chocolate croissant) and then have it as my breakfast in the morning in the room with the milk I had delivered from Garden Grocer (see Part 2 of this series for more info on that). It is like a free, amazing breakfast without even leaving my room or getting out of my PJs!

4. You can find EVERY menu for EVERY restaurant in the parks and at the hotels here. Find what you like and what works with your park plan (if you are eating at a park you will want to make sure you are visiting that park that day, obvs), start plugging in your meals into the cute little planner below. Or just write it on a post-it note. Up to you. Make your meal reservations as early as you can. You can always make changes to them later but they tend to fill up fast. If you like to eat dinner at 4:45 you will be fine. You can make reservations starting 180 days before your vacation (you read that right!). You can make them over the phone or online. All the info is right here

5. Keeping track of your reservations can get a little tricky. You can use the official My Disney Experience app (for the whole iFamily and Androids)! More about this app in Part 4 of the series) or just write them down on paper. Here is a cute download you can print at home.

Whew! That was a lot and there is still so much more I could write but I am going to leave it at that for now and share more with you in Parts 4 and 5!

Have a fabulous day! 8:)   <---- that is a smiley with Mickey ears on!

you can do it: Minecraft Split Screen 101

This one is dedicated to all of the mamas out there who have kiddos caught up in the Minecraft craze! You know who you are! Woot woot!

original image from talkingaboutgames.com

So you have more than one kiddo OR a kiddo and a couple of friends who want to play Minecraft together on Xbox on the same TV (AKA split screen)? Me, too!

Despite numerous google searches and two trips two GameStop (not my favorite place to spend my days) I still struggled to get this to work and make peace among my two young Minecrafters. Now that I know how to do it, I HAD to share the information with you because you will NOT believe how easy it is to do. There are only TWO things that you need.

1. An HDMI cable. This one is on sale on Amazon for $4.99 with free Prime shipping.

2. An HD (high definition TV). If you don't have one, split screen will not work. I am not suggesting you go out and by an HD TV just for Minecraft. I just want you to have the information to make it work if you want. They have become less expensive and the one pictured below is on sale at Amazon for $189.

3. Connect one end of the HDMI cord to the Xbox and the other end to the TV and you are in business!

Your kiddos and your sanity ("Is it my turn yeeeet?" "He's been playing for like 2 hourrrrrrs!!!") will thank you for it. xo

send a cooler thank you note: Postagram

original image from blog.postagramapp.com
appLove: Postagram

While this app is a quick and easy way to send a fabulous postcard from your latest trip, it also makes for a super fun, totally quirky (and EASY) thank you note! Postagram is available for the iPhone/iPod/iPad family as well as Androids. Yahoo! Have the person (or in this case pet!) pose with the gift and voila, snap a quick photo and you are good to go! Your recipient will find a nice card stock postcard in their mailbox. The photo has a perforated edge so they can pop it right out of the postcard if they like! They can even slap a magnet on the back and they have a totally customized and adorable magnet.

Step One: Select your photo from your phone, Instagram, or Facebook!

Step Two: I've never really understood why you might want to add a profile picture but I wanted to point it out. It is easy to miss and I can't even remember ever assigning a picture to my Postagram profile. Anyway, could be a cute way to add a second photo OR you could just choose NONE. Up to you.

Step Three: Add your personalized message!

Step Four: You are limited to 180 characters total. There is a character countdown in the lower right-hand corner so you can craft your note with care.

Step Five: Select a recipient from your address book and hit send. No stamps to worry about! No trip to the mailbox.

printabliciousness: morning checklist!

[Pssst. You. Yeah, you! Have you liked us on Facebook yet? It would mean so much! xo]

Mornings in our house used to involve a lot of crazy rushing around with me reminding/yelling things like, "Where's your backpack?" or "Why don't you have a shirt on yet?" I knew there had to be an easier way. Something that would put the onus on my kiddos and save my vocal chords and my sanity. I instantly turned to Children Inspire Design, an ADORable website featuring the artwork of Rebecca Peragine. She offers beautiful and inspiring kiddo-friendly artwork that is "cool" enough for even the most style-conscious kiddos and tweens in your household. She also offers tons of great printables to encourage responsibility and other great values like kindness, respect, and environmental-awareness.

Needless to say, when I came across her FREE morning checklist, I was thrilled. You can download it here and see how she uses it in her house! Because I did not have wall space for two more frames, I opted instead to laminate (using my handy dandy Scotch Thermal Laminator) my kiddos' checklists and use magnets to attach them to our oh-so-attractive 1977 kitchen door. It would be just as easy to hang them on your fridge or pin them to a bulletin board! I also added a magnetic dry erase marker (like those found in this set) and we were good to go!

Because my little one was not reading yet at the beginning of the school year, I drew VERY simple pictures next to each line item so that he would know what he needed to do. I think this actually helped him learn some new words in a "sight word-y" kind of way!

Now instead of yelling, "Grab your backpack!" or "Find your sneakers!" I simply say, "List." I might say it 100 times but I no longer have to keep track of who has done what. Simply, "List."

Side note: There isn't a whole lot of tv watching happening here in the AM (mostly due to lack of time. We love our sleep!). BUT if there does happen to be enough time for a little Phineas and Ferb on good old Netflix, the list needs to be completed first.

Here is to smoother mornings all around! xo

blog crush: modern parents messy kids

I was first drawn to this week's blog crush "Modern Parents Messy Kids" by a pin on Pinterest linking to what they affectionately refer to as POYEL, otherwise known as "Project Organize Your ENTIRE Life." I will admit this is one of those pins that I quickly pinned but wondered if I would return to later. I mean, your ENTIRE life?! I was excited and overwhelmed all at once. One of the many reasons I love Pinterest: pin it and go back to it later, or maybe not.

So one day while feeling ambitious, I clicked on it and boy was I glad I did. This website, whose motto is "mindful living, effortless style," is an absolute treasure trove of great stuff. As you may know, part of my motto here at CG is "quick and easy" so let me point you toward the good stuff and I will leave you to browse around on your own.

Here are my MPMK faves:

Virtual Book Club- I belong to a real-life book club and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Sometimes finding time to get together can be next to impossible because of busy kiddos and traveling husbands. If you can relate than maybe a virtual book club is right for you!

A Case for Making your Dining Room an Art Room- I am pretty sure my husband would never go for this but it sounds super fun. ;)

Playroom Perfection- WOW! I have seen hundreds of playroom ideas and photos on Pinterest but this one really hits a home run. I am slightly obsessed with Lego organization and the system they show here seems simple, easy to use, and cute to boot!

6-Week Meal Plan (with shopping lists)- Six whole weeks of meals planned out for you with the shopping lists included. Please and thank you! I have seen many of these making the rounds on the web but this one looks like it has the highest percentage of meals that my adorable, yet picky kiddos would actually eat.

And last but not least... the pièce de résistance:

Project Organize Your ENTIRE Life (POYEL)!

creative geekery virtual day camp: day 5

Friday already? How is that possible? Don't worry, you still have all day today and then the weekend ahead. So campers, welcome to the last day of creative geekery's first ever school vacation day camp! If you missed day 1, 2, 3, or 4 of camp, do not worry! It just means you still have tons of fun things left to do. You can still join in the fun and catch up on those posts here: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4. Enjoy!

Friday is always the best day of the week but you still need something fun to do! Here goes...

Something to do: Create your own story with a "Sticker Grab Bag" OR get outdoors and go geocaching! I have done this with my boys and my aunt a few times and we ALL had a blast. No clue what it is? HERE is a good place to start.

For the little guys: V is for Volcano!

Something to eat: Waffle Maker Cinnamon Buns! Ok, maybe this one doesn't fall into the healthy category but they sure are yummy and fun. Have you seen the cinnamon buns from Immaculate Baking Co? I actually recognize all of the ingredients!

Something to read: I just swung by Tell Me a Story and Christie helped me hand pick a slew of fabulous books for my boys! Simply put, she ROCKS. These are really for my 9-year old but would be great to read to my 7-year old as well. Locals, go there and spend a little time with her. You will not regret it! For non-locals, links below will take you to Amazon.

  1. "Crunch" by Leslie Connor
  2. "Guys Read: Funny Business" A collection of stories edited by Jon Scieszka
  3. "Savvy" by Ingrid Law

BONUS: Something to do THIS WEEKEND! Build a monster truck at Lowes' "Build and Grow" workshop. It's free!

Hope everybody had fun this week! And enjoy your weekend! xo

creative geekery virtual day camp: day 4

Welcome to day four of creative geekery's first ever school vacation day camp! This week is flying! If you missed day 1, 2, or 3 of camp, do not worry! You can still join in the fun and catch up on those posts here: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3. Enjoy!

Here is what will make your Thursday the best day of the week yet...

Something to do: Mad Libs app. A whole new spin on the old classic! Download for iPhones and iPods or for the iPad.

image from iTunes store

Something to eat: Secret Ingredient Brownies (wink, wink)! These are AMAZing and good for your belly. I usually end up eating more than the kiddos. Even though it is not as healthy, I add peanut butter chips. I skip the confectioner's sugar because I never have it on hand. YUMMMM!

Something to read: Today's pick comes from local book store owner Christie Michaud! One of the MANY reasons I love local book stores... they really know their stuff! Stop in and see her and tell her I sent you! The shop is beautiful and you will want one of everything.

I strive to familiarize myself with books that will please a family of kids spanning a broad age range...like 3 or 4 to 10 or 11, because I love the idea of families reading together. So, hmmm, I'm going to say Chicken Feathers by Joy Cowley. It tickles the funny bone, pulls at the heart strings, and moves along at a pretty good clip keeping everyone rapt.

creative geekery virtual day camp: day 3

Welcome to day three of creative geekery's first ever school vacation day camp! Time flies when you are having fun. If you missed day 1 or 2 of camp, do not worry! You can still join in the fun and catch up on those posts here: Day 1 and Day 2. As I have said before, everyone is welcome to join and I hope you will invite other friends who might be interested as well. School's out so it is TIME FOR FUN!

Here is what I think would be super cool for today...

Something to do: Stop motion animation using iStopMotion! I used to use this piece of software back in my teaching days in my digital multimedia class. The things the kids came up with ere amazing! When you go to the site, scroll down a bit for some inspiration. You can create something simple (think a paper fish swimming around a piece of paper) or something super fancy (build cities out of legos)! (NOTE: The full version for your computer is expensive but you can get a 5 day trial. It is much more reasonable priced for the iPhone/iPod/iPad family.)

For the little guys: Cloud dough.

image from tinkerlab.com

Something to eat: Pumpkin French Toast! I first discovered this recipe in Jessica Seinfeld's "Deceptively Delicious" cookbook years ago. I make it without a recipe now but I couldn't tell you the measurements but I found this one over on Real Mom Kitchen and it looks pretty close to what I do. This is great for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner. So versatile!

Something to read: The Lunch Lady Series. These books are a riot! They are graphic novels in a similiar vein as Diary of Wimpy Kid but not quite as fresh so I like them for my 7 year old who is prone to pick up "fresh-ness."

creative geekery virtual day camp: day 2

Welcome to day two of creative geekery's first ever school vacation day camp! Each day you can come here to find fun things to do, a yummy recipe to make a great snack or meal and a book or two to read. Everyone is welcome to join and I hope you will invite other friends who might be interested as well. If you missed Day 1, you can have double the fun today!

Here is what is I have in store for you today...

Something to do: Scribble Press app! This is an ABSOLUTE gem of an app that allows kiddos to create their own books with their own stories and illustrations. You can order their book from Scribble Press or the kiddos can submit their book to the SP virtual library for free to share with other SP kiddos! How fun is that? For an SP ebook on how to create an SP ebook :) click the image below. (Hint: My 9 year old liked this app a whole lot more when I got him a stylus. I found one at TJ Maxx for $7!)

For the little guys: Water Beads

Something to eat: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites (your kiddos will NEVER guess the secret ingredient. yum!)

Something to read: "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. (Especially great if your kiddo is using the Scribble Press app and says, "But I don't know what to write/draw!") In stock at Tell Me a Story in Enfield, CT for locals!

Note: Tune in tomorrow for another fabulous suggestion from Christie of "Tell Me a Story"!

creative geekery virtual day camp: day 1

Welcome to day one of creative geekery's first ever school vacation day camp! Each day you can come here to find fun things to do, a yummy recipe to make a great snack or meal and a book or two to read. Everyone is welcome to join and I hope you will invite other friends who might be interested as well. School's out so it is TIME FOR FUN!

Here is what is on tap for today...

Something to do:

Download this 3D font and create something cool! Maybe your name or a favorite word. A favorite sport? All you need is a printer, some scissors and some tape. (If you don't know how to download and install fonts, refer to my Fonts 101 post.)

image from dafont.com

For the little ones:Gak!

Something to eat:

Smoothies are big in our house! My kiddos don't really like fruits or veggies so this is a quick way to get a ton of GREAT stuff into them fast. Here is my recipe but feel free to improv:

  • 2 cups strawberry Kefir (it is like drinkable yogurt. They have it at the Big Y in our town but my favorite is from Trader Joe's. You could also substitute regular yogurt and just add more liquid.)
  • 2 cups of frozen tri-berry mix (the one I get is strawberries, blueberries and raspberries)
  • 2 cups of baby spinach (I swear they will NOT taste it)
  • 1 cup of water or orange juice (depending on your kiddo's taste buds)
  • 1 banana
  • BONUS: add ground flax seed for added fiber! You can NOT taste it!
Like most things, this smoothie is more fun to drink through a straw!

Something to read:

One of our all-time favorite books as a family is Todd Parr's "The Peace Book." The artwork is amazing, the message is heart-warming. It teaches about difference and tolerance and love and peace in a super fun way.

I recently asked local book store owner Christie Michaud for some recommendations for the "day camp." Here is one of her fabulous recs. Check back later in the week for another! This lady knows her stuff!

I would definitely have to say the Adventure of Riley series because I believe it to be an unsung hero in the picture book world. A product of The Smithsonian and The World Wildlife Federation, it fictionalizes the trips of real-life wildlife biologist Max in a way that is simply irresistible to kids 4-9ish. We started buying them in our home about 4 years ago after finding one at the library and they all remain go-to's in our home, and points of reference for various scientific facts and discoveries in nature. The are absolute treasures! I will choose two as my top picks: South Pole Penguins, because penguins are insanely popular right now, and Mission to Madagascar, because its focus is on an animal I had never heard of before or since anywhere else: the aye-aye.

If you are local, pick up these gems over at "Tell Me a Story" in Enfield, CT. If not, there is always good old Amazon

blog crush: Hands Free Mama

School vacation week begins at the end of the school day here in Massachusetts and I have decided to dedicate next week's posts to Rachel Macy Stafford over at Hands Free Mama. Her blog was born from her realization that she was so distracted by daily minutiae and her need to try and "do it all" that she was missing out on the little moments with her kiddos. She explains that while she was so busy multi-tasking, her kids were just getting the "leftovers," what she describes as, "the worthless scraps of their stretched-too-thin mother." I think we can all relate! I will admit at times her posts make me feel a little guilty. There, I said it! But I just try to take it in stride and use those moments to check in with myself and make sure I am doing what is right for me AND my kiddos. There is no one way to do it.

That said, in the spirit of Hands Free Mama, I will only be posting once a day next week. I won't be responding to posts on Facebook or pinning to Pinterest but I will happily write back to all comments and questions when the week is over. Enjoy and dare yourself to get a little "hands free" this week! xo

10 minutes to a quiet mind

When you are in need of a zen moment, YouTube may not be the first thing that pops into your head. Think again!

A couple of weeks back I was in need of some major help to quiet my racing mind. Usually my remedy is a nap but I was short on time. I thought back to an amazing yoga class I had attended recently and longed for the total relaxation I achieved during the guided imagery exercise we did at the end of class. I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to have a tape of my teacher and her magical words that eased my stress and took away every little worry?" So the bad news is my adorable little white-haired yoga teacher is not on YouTube (yet!) but there are TONS of guided meditations on there to chill you out ever so slightly.

Here was the one I chose and loved (it runs for just about 10 minutes). Find the one that is right for you.

Peace. xo
