I have some great news for you! You NEVER have to buy Microsoft Office again. There is an application (for Macs and PCs) called OpenOffice.org that was created just over ten years ago as a free alternative to the Microsoft Office suite. Essentially, a group of programmers was fed up with Microsoft and got together and created a suite of applications that will allow you to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and SO MUCH MORE (see below).
They continue to work on it and there are updates all the time. Starting your own business? One last startup cost! Going off to college? Save the money for books (or beer)! Too good to be true? Nope!
Note: OpenOffice.org can open Microsoft Office files as well! And vice versa.
